QMCG’s Packing Week took place from Tuesday 7th – Thursday 9th October at St James’s Palace. Despite our worries that the repair work to the Banquet Room would cause problems, tea and coffee were served as normal in this room to the 150 volunteers on Tuesday and Wednesday and the 100 visitors during Wednesday morning on View Day. HRH Princess Alexandra was able to attend View Day and met a large number of those present, her interest in QMCG is evident to all those who were lucky enough to meet her.
Volunteers from Veterans Aid worked as Porters and their cheerful help was greatly appreciated by all those working at the Palace. On Thursday morning their ‘can do’ attitude was evident when they moved the 566 bags of new garments and linens from around the State Rooms to the Ambassadors Court door as the different charities arrived to collect their grants.
QMCG is still waiting for confirmation from Scotland, and Cornwall for their distribution figures but 21,085 items have been distributed to 53 charities so far.
Thank you letters have been received by QMCG from: St Christopher’s Hospice, St Mary’s Convent & Nursing Home, London City Mission, St Luke’s Hospice, SSAFA (East London Division) Croydon Refugee Day Centre and IndependentAge.
The work carried out at Packing Week is only possible due to the hard work of all the Presidents and their groups throughout the year and the charities who are supported are very thankful for this.
